TIMOTHY JANSEN VAN VUUREN

TIMOTHY JANSEN VAN VUURENTIMOTHY JANSEN VAN VUURENTIMOTHY JANSEN VAN VUUREN

BIO

I am a natural history camera operator with a passion for capturing the wonders of the natural world.  Born and raised in South Africa I gained years of experience as a game ranger and now as a natural history filmmaker.

Throughout my career, I have had the privilege of working on multiple wildlife productions, both as an assistant, a behind the scenes shooter and as a camera operator. My goal has always been to document animal behavior and present it in an educational and captivating way, inspiring both current and future generations to appreciate and conserve the natural world.

In addition to wildlife documentaries, I have also explored the relationships between humans and nature. Through my work, I aim to highlight the importance of these connections for our own well-being as a species and for the diverse lifeforms we share this planet with.

Outside of my professional endeavors, I find joy and fulfillment in outdoor activities such as surfing, freediving, hiking, rock climbing, swimming, and scuba diving. These experiences further deepen my connection with the natural world.

The locations/countries I have experience filming in are:

South Africa, Botswana, Zambia, Kenya, Tanzania, Somalia, Uganda, Republic of the Congo, Cameroon, Senegal, Madagascar, Chile, Argentina, Australia, Fiji, Tonga, New Zealand, Norway, Scotland (Shetland Islands) and Iceland.

The different environments I have experience filming in are:

  • On land in savannah bushveld, deserts, equatorial rainforests, forests, mountains and snow. (This has been a combination of on foot, from 4x4 open vehicles and from fast paced raleigh vehicles)
  • From the air in helicopters as well as operating drones.
  • On the ocean from RIBs, large ships, kayaks and jet skis.
  • From in and underwater (SCUBA, freediving & swimming) on coral reefs, kelp forests, far out to open sea. In large and powerful waves and currents. In river systems both calm rivers and in rapids as well as freshwater lakes.

My dual citizenship, holding both South African and Italian passports, along with the flexibility of my current Australian visa, allows me to navigate international projects with ease. With my wealth of experience, passion for nature, and dedication to creating impactful content, I am committed to delivering exceptional results in every project I undertake.

NATURAL HISTORY SHOWREELS

OCEAN SHOWREEL

A collection of some of my underwater adventures. From the cold Atlantic waters of my home in Cape Town South Africa all the way up to the warmer coral reefs of the Somalian coasline with a number of other places dotted in between. The ocean has helped shape my life and is one of the driving forces propelling me to search and explore more of this wonderful and largely unexplored environment.

LAND SHOWREEL

A collection of some of the footage I have been privileged enough to shoot mostly on my home continent of Africa and on an epic adventure I undertook to Patagonia, South America.

DOCUMENTARY WORK

I filmed this for the European Union through the company 7Films where the European Union is funding meaningful and important initiatives for conservation and woman empowerement in Africa where these woman are making fundamental changes to better their countries, communities and conserving their natural evironments.

FRIDA - Tanzania

This is Frida, a water plant manager in Tanzania. I helped film this project for the European Union done through the company 7Films where the European Union is funding meaningful and important initiatives for conservation and woman empowerement in Africa where woman are making fundamental changes to better their countries, communities and conserving their natural evironments.

SHIFTING POWER - Africa

Through a cinematic journey, "Shifting Power" provides an intimate lens into the lives of various African communities, whose existences and futures are being reshaped and affected in many ways by the gas boom. The documentary positions itself not merely as an observer but as a narrative woven from the fabric of the affected communities, offering a humanizing perspective on the socio-economic and environmental upheavals they face due to natural resource exploitation within their countries and communities.  I was fortunate enough to be the DOP on this documentary about my home continent working with ReWild Africa.
